Dates: Friday thru Sunday, 26-28 April 2019. Registration begins at 8am and class begins promptly at 9am on Day 1 (Friday) and will conclude by noon on Day 3 (Sunday). If the optional ZC module is desired, class will end by 5 PM Sunday. NOTE: Students must make their own travel arrangements to and lodging arrangements at this training location.

Airport: The closest airport is Tulsa International (TUL), which is about 9-miles (15 minutes) by vehicle. Other nearby airports include Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City (OKC – 115 miles; 2 hours) or Kansas City International Airport (MCI – 275 miles; 4-1/2 hours).

Meals: Day-long coffee/tea/bottled water will be provided in the lecture room at the host venue. Hearty lunches are included, on-site, on Days 2 and 3. All dinners, including dinner on Day 1, are “on your own” and students should plan accordingly.

Course Instructors: Janet Tyburec, Bat Survey Solutions; Chris Corben (inventor of the ubiquitous Anabat detector); Kim Livengood, Titley Electronics; John Chenger, Bat Conservation and Management, and a representative of Wildlife Acoustics, Inc.

Pre-course Preparation: This training is conducted in a classroom setting and there will be no field component for this training. Students will learn how to organize and post-process echolocation call recordings using KaleidoscopePRO and SonoBat4 software and associated utilities. Students should already have experience with deploying bat detectors or collecting echolocation call data for analysis. This training focuses specifically on the collection of full-spectrum echolocation call data from all Binary Acoustic, Pettersson, and Wildlife Acoustic bat detectors, as well as select Titley (AnaBat) bat detectors.

To get the most out of this training, students must bring a laptop computer to class and be able to navigate efficiently and effectively across their operating system of choice (Mac or PC or Linux). Specifically, students need (1) a high degree of comfort with installing software, creating, naming, organizing, copying, moving, and deleting files, directories, sub-directories, folders, and associated digital content; (2) to use common word-processing software or utilities (e.g., Microsoft Word, Text Edit, Notepad) to create and format text documents; (3) to use common computer utilities to generate screenshots; (4) be able to import and format *.csv and/or tab or comma-delimited *.txt files into common spreadsheet software (Microsoft Excel is preferred, but a strong working knowledge or other spreadsheet programs is fine); (5) understand basing spreadsheet formatting to adjust displays, sort and filter data, employ common equations used to calculate data fields, extract text strings, and auto-fill worksheet cells; (6) understand the use and design of pivot tables to extract and/or summarize large chunks of data; and (7) how to use a GPS tracking device (or smart phone app) to generate and export a *.gpx file and convert between different datum types. Some of these tasks will be explained as they pertain to manipulating echolocation call files and other acoustic data, but instructors will not have time to provide basic computer operating system software instructions to new users.

Approximately ten-days prior to the start of class, students will receive digital download instructions for trial versions of the KaleidoscopePRO and SonoBat4 acoustic software programs we will feature in class as well as a complete list of what to bring and how to prepare for class. Add Zero-cross Data Module (optional): All our trainings emphasize regional bat classifications of "full-spectrum" acoustic data using KaPRO and SonoBat software, but when the last day of the training concludes at noon, we will offer an optional extended mini-course to demonstrate workflows for processing zero-cross files in Kaleidoscope Pro for analysis in BCID and EchoClass. Instructors will guide participants on how to interpret the BCID and EchoClass automated outputs and use AnaLook and Kaleidoscope Pro to manually vet file-level classifications to confirm or reject MLE’s for species presence. Lunch on this day and an additional evening data management geek session is included. NOTE: Participants must register separately for the optional Zero-cross Module. The registration fee for the module is $349 and is non-refundable.
